The second run ran an impressive fifteen years and was one of Marvel Comics Top Ten in the 1970’s.

After Claremont's run, the X-Men were divided into two color-coded squads, the X-Men or the blue colored team and The Uncanny X-Men, aka the gold team. Scott Lobdell, was fully credited as writer, in the third run of Uncanny X-Men starting with comic book issue #289. The new volume of Uncanny X-Men featured the Extinction Team, and contained members of the X-Men that had remained with Cyclops to deal with potential threats to the mutant race's survival. . Volume two ended with Cyclops, in prison for his actions during this event.

Uncanny X-Men comic books were relaunched a third time with Volume three, which was part of Marvel Now!. Lasting two years, this series featured Cyclops and the remnants of his Extinction Team after the events of the first All-New X-Men story arc.

Volume four relaunched as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel, and is being written by Cullen Bunn with art by Greg Land. The Uncanny X-Men team will feature Magneto leading Psylocke, Archangel, M, Mystique, Fantomex and Sabretooth while a different team will be led by Storm and be called the Extraordinary X-Men.
